Biography
Outside of work:
Zia has recently assumed the role of President (Worldwide) for the term of 2023/2024 for the Association of International Lawyers (AIL).
During the 2022/2023 term, Zia held the position of Senior Vice President (Worldwide) at the Association of International Lawyers (AIL).
His achievements in this role included:
Fostering international legal collaboration.
Promoting professional development.
Advancing the goals and values of the AIL.
Actively participating as Senior Vice President (AIL) in organising the 2023 International Law Conference on Human Rights held at the Honourable Society of Gray’s inn where speakers, including Justices, Solicitors, Barristers, MPs, and Lords will discuss issues and solutions involving human rights.
Zia has also held the office of President of the International Lawyers Association (ILA) – Northwest region (2021-22) and he was at the forefront of:
Achieving the goals and values of the ILA.
Organise an International Law Conference on human rights in 2022 at the Honourable Society of Lincoln Inn.
Zia actively participates in UK and Pakistani politics, having come from a politically-engaged family. He has been representing a famous Pakistani political party, holding the office of ‘President of the Legal Wing North-West of England UK) since July 2017.
Zia is also an active member of the local community. He is committed to helping and advising people on social and legal issues, often on a pro-bono basis, and this has led to many community awards.
Career highlights:
Zia has resolved hundreds of complex immigration cases in which his clients had all but given up hope of achieving a positive result. He has also worked on high-profile Afghani asylum cases following the re-installation of the Taliban regime.
As a senior advocate in Pakistan, Zia has also advised on several constitutional and democratic upheavals that have taken place within the country. In addition, he has advised political and public figures, in both the UK and abroad, on legal and constitutional matters.
