What is a Standard Visitor Visa
The UK Standard Visitor Visa allows people from certain countries to enter the UK. Reasons for coming to Britain may include tourism, business meetings, academic conferences, medical treatment, to visit family and friends, or transit through the country. The Standard Visitor Visa replaced the previously separate categories for general, business, child, sport, entertainer, and private medical treatment.

The other types of visitor visas are:

  • Permitted Paid Engagement Visa – allows you to visit the UK for one month if you have been invited to the country as an expert in your profession by a UK-based organisation or client.
  • Transit Visa – your airline will tell you if you need a visa if your flight transits through the UK. There are two types of Transit Visa:
    • Direct Airside Transit Visa – required if you are changing flights at a UK airport but do not need to go through boarder control.
    • Visitor In Transit Visa - if you will be going through UK border control but leaving the UK within 48 hours.

  • Marriage Visitor Visa – allows you to come to the UK to get married or register a civil partnership. You can stay in the UK for up to six months; however, you cannot work or study during that time.
  • Visit the UK as a Chinese tour group – permits you to enter the UK for up to 30 days as part of a tour group (five or more people) through the approved destination status agreement (ADS). You must be a Chinese citizen to apply.
  • Electronic Visa Waiver – applies to citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Do I need a Standard Visitor Visa to come to the UK?
Citizens of certain countries do not require a Standard Visitor Visa to enter the UK. If you are from an EU/EEA member state, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, or the USA you can enter Britain visa-free and stay a certain number of months. If you are unsure about whether you require a Standard Visitor Visa, our Immigration Law Solicitors can quickly advise you.
