Understanding the Minister of Religion Route

This route sits within the UK’s Points Based Immigration System and is reserved for individuals undertaking a formal religious position. It is distinct from the Religious Worker Visa, which covers temporary or support roles within a faith community.

Salary, Maintenance, and Sponsorship

The sponsoring organisation must confirm that the applicant’s salary is at least equivalent to that paid to local clergy or faith leaders performing similar duties.

Following the July 2025 reforms, the Home Office requires all sponsor employers to demonstrate fair pay and genuine vacancy conditions in line with Appendix Skilled Worker standards. Salaries must reflect the full-time nature of the post and be paid through verifiable payroll channels.

The Data Use and Access Act 2025 (DUAA) has empowered the Home Office to cross-check sponsor salary data with HMRC’s Real Time Information (RTI) system. Any inconsistency between reported and actual earnings can trigger a compliance audit.

Duration and Path to Settlement

The visa is usually granted for up to three years and one month, or the period stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship plus fourteen days, whichever is shorter.

It can be extended for a further three years, allowing up to six years of residence in total. After five continuous years in this route, the applicant may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), provided they continue to meet the eligibility and sponsorship requirements.
