Our solicitors, acting as Commissioners for Oaths, ensure that the procedure is carried out correctly in line with the Commissioners for Oaths Act 1889, the Statutory Declarations Act 1835, and current evidentiary rules.
An oath is a solemn promise to tell the truth, usually made by swearing on a holy book or in the name of a religious belief.
An affirmation serves the same legal purpose but is a non-religious promise to tell the truth. Both carry the same legal force and effect, and both are required to be administered by an authorised person such as a solicitor or commissioner for oaths.
Oaths and affirmations are often required when signing affidavits, giving evidence for court or tribunal proceedings, completing statutory declarations, or confirming the truth of official statements for use in the United Kingdom or abroad.
Our solicitors ensure that each oath or affirmation is administered properly and that the documents signed under it are legally valid and ready for submission.
When you attend an appointment at our office or online, our solicitor will confirm your identity, explain the form of oath or affirmation, and ensure you understand the significance of the promise you are making.
You will then be invited to swear or affirm that the contents of the document are true. Once this is done, the solicitor will witness your signature and complete the certification confirming that the oath or affirmation has been properly administered.
We can assist with oaths for court documents, affidavits, probate applications, property transfers, immigration and visa applications, or any other matter requiring sworn verification.
Our role is to ensure that the procedure is carried out lawfully and professionally. We do not advise on the content of the document itself unless specifically instructed to do so.

You must attend in person with valid photographic identification and the relevant document. A solicitor will verify your identity, administer the oath or affirmation, witness your signature, and complete the appropriate certification.
We do not currently administer oaths or affirmations remotely or through digital appointments. Please contact our office to arrange an appointment.

All records are managed and stored in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, under the oversight of the Information Commission (formerly the ICO).
