At First Law Solicitors, we help individuals and families across the United Kingdom prepare and register Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).
An LPA ensures that, if you lose the ability to make decisions in the future, a person you trust can step in to act on your behalf.
Our solicitors provide practical and reassuring guidance from start to finish, ensuring your LPAs are correctly prepared, properly witnessed and legally registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG).
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document made under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. It allows you to appoint one or more people known as attorneys to make decisions for you if you lose mental capacity or simply wish them to act on your behalf.
There are two types of LPA. The Property and Financial Affairs LPA authorises your attorney to manage your finances, property, investments and bills, either while you still have capacity or if you lose it later.
The Health and Welfare LPA allows your attorney to make decisions about your medical treatment, care and living arrangements, but only once you can no longer decide for yourself.
Both types of LPA must be signed and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can be used.

Our solicitors take time to understand your situation and guide you through every step of creating your LPAs. We explain the differences between the two types, help you choose suitable attorneys and ensure your wishes are clearly expressed in the documents.
We also oversee proper signing and witnessing to meet the legal requirements of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and we handle registration with the Office of the Public Guardian on your behalf.
Since 2025, LPAs can be registered through the new OPG Digital Registration Service, which allows for secure online submission and verification under the Digital Verification Services (DVS) framework. Our solicitors ensure your application meets these digital standards and that all records are managed lawfully under UK GDPR and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, overseen by the Information Commission (formerly the ICO).
If you already have an LPA, we can review it to confirm that it still reflects your wishes and complies with current legal and digital requirements.
Making an LPA early means you stay in control of who will make important decisions for you if needed. It is particularly valuable if you wish to plan ahead in case of illness, manage property or business interests, or ensure that a trusted person can deal with your care and finances without delay.
We advise many clients to put both LPAs in place at the same time so that all aspects of their life financial and personal are protected with consistency and clarity.
At First Law Solicitors, we understand that creating a Power of Attorney is a deeply personal decision.
We explain each step clearly, answer your questions and make sure your documents are fully compliant with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and current OPG procedures.
Every LPA we prepare is drafted with care and precision, ensuring that your chosen attorneys can act lawfully and in your best interests.
We also help clients who act as attorneys themselves, providing guidance on their duties, decision-making and reporting obligations under the latest OPG digital standards.
