Graduate Trainee Visa

Understanding the Graduate Trainee Visa

The Graduate Trainee Visa is designed for employees who are part of a formal graduate programme and are being temporarily assigned to a UK branch or connected entity for the purpose of training or professional development.

This route replaced the former Intra Company Graduate Trainee Visa and now operates as one of the five pathways within the Global Business Mobility framework. It reflects the UK Government’s objective of creating a transparent, digitally monitored route for corporate talent exchange.

Applicants must have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship issued by a licensed sponsor and must have been employed by the overseas entity for a qualifying period before applying. The position in the UK must be a genuine graduate-level role and part of an approved structured training programme that leads to a senior managerial or specialist position overseas.

Eligibility and Professional Criteria

To qualify, the applicant must:

As of January 2026, the minimum annual salary must meet or exceed twenty-three thousand one hundred pounds, or the going rate for the role as defined in the relevant occupation code, whichever is higher.

Our solicitors ensure all sponsorship, contract, and payroll documentation meets the exact evidential standards required under the 2026 immigration framework, reducing the risk of technical refusals.

Sponsorship and DUAA 2025 Compliance

Every UK business hosting a graduate trainee must hold a valid Sponsor Licence under the Global Business Mobility category. Sponsors are legally required to assign accurate Certificates of Sponsorship, maintain complete employee records, and report any change in employment circumstances within a strict timeframe.

Under the Data Use and Access Act 2025, the Home Office conducts real-time audits by cross-referencing payroll and sponsorship data with HMRC systems. This means that compliance is now continuous rather than periodic.

At First Law Solicitors, we perform Digital Compliance Audits for our corporate clients to ensure that their sponsorship systems meet DUAA 2025 standards. Our process verifies salary consistency, employee location data, and programme documentation to prevent automatic licence flags or suspensions.

We also authenticate all Certificates of Sponsorship and related documents using Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES), ensuring legal integrity and data protection throughout the application process.

Duration of Stay and Immigration Strategy

The Graduate Trainee Visa allows employees to stay in the United Kingdom for the duration of their training assignment, up to a maximum of twelve months at a time. It cannot be extended beyond the statutory limit, although a new application can be made from overseas if the programme requires further rotation.

Time spent under this route does not count towards settlement in the United Kingdom. However, many of our clients transition to settlement-eligible categories such as the Skilled Worker or Innovator Founder routes upon completing their corporate training.

Our solicitors structure each client’s immigration timeline to ensure uninterrupted career progression and corporate compliance across multiple jurisdictions.

Digital Application and eVisa Process

From 1 January 2026, all Global Business Mobility applications, including Graduate Trainee Visas, are fully digital. Applicants verify identity using the UK Immigration ID Check App, and successful applicants receive confirmation of their immigration status through a UKVI digital account.

Physical visa stickers and Biometric Residence Permits are no longer issued. Sponsors and employees access and share immigration status digitally through secure verification codes.

All filings submitted by First Law Solicitors are completed under DUAA 2025 protocols, with encrypted data transfer and digital signature validation to ensure total compliance with the Home Office’s eVisa standards.
