Youth Mobility Scheme

Understanding the Youth Mobility Scheme

The Youth Mobility Scheme allows eligible nationals aged between 18 and 35 (for some countries) or 18 and 30 (for others) to live and work in the United Kingdom for a fixed period without needing a sponsor or job offer.

It is a temporary visa designed to foster cultural exchange and career development. Participants may work, study, volunteer, or travel freely across the UK during their stay.

As of 8 January 2026, the scheme operates under the Statement of Changes HC 1491, which introduces differentiated duration and age limits based on nationality.

This framework reflects the differentiated bilateral agreements underpinning the Youth Mobility and Young Professionals routes.

Our solicitors verify nationality-specific criteria before submission, ensuring your application reflects the correct stay duration and age eligibility to prevent automatic refusal by UKVI systems.

The India “Young Professionals Scheme”

For Indian nationals, participation occurs through a separate Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) rather than the general YMS.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree (RQF Level 6) or have at least three years of professional experience in a relevant field. This requirement is mandatory and verified through education and employment records.

India operates under an annual quota distributed via a ballot system. Successful candidates receive an invitation to apply within a specific window.

At First Law Solicitors, we prepare documentation for both the ballot and post-selection application stages, ensuring every document from degree certificates to financial evidence complies with Appendix Youth Mobility Scheme: India standards.

Financial and Healthcare Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves upon arrival.

The maintenance requirement is £2,530, which must be held for at least 28 consecutive days before the application date.

In addition, all applicants must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which rose significantly in 2025 to £1,035 per year. For a two-year visa, the upfront healthcare surcharge is payable for the full duration of stay.

We help applicants compile financial documents that meet Home Office standards, ensuring that bank statements are properly formatted, verifiable, and compliant with anti-fraud provisions under the Data Use and Access Act 2025 (DUAA).

Digital Filing and eVisa

The Youth Mobility Scheme is now entirely digital. From 1 January 2025, all successful applicants receive an eVisa, verified through their UKVI account. Physical visa vignettes and Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are no longer issued.

Applicants from low-risk countries such as Australia, Japan, or Canada must complete identity verification through the UK Immigration: ID Check App, unless their passport chip fails to scan, in which case a biometric appointment may still be required.

Our solicitors manage all digital procedures on your behalf, using Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) for secure authentication and ensuring full compliance with DUAA 2025 digital privacy standards.

What You Can Do Under the Youth Mobility Scheme

Participants may work in most sectors, undertake study, or volunteer. However, they cannot:

While this visa does not directly lead to permanent settlement, many individuals use their experience to transition into Skilled Worker, Graduate, or Innovator Founder visas.

Our solicitors provide long-term planning advice, helping you leverage your UK experience toward permanent opportunities.
